How we built our dream house with indoor Mediterranean garden in a temperate climate
This video presents the main features of our recently built house with a terrace and a small indoor garden, which we like to call 'La Maison du soleil - The Sun House - model 'M'.
This presentation includes the main features of this house, the main construction steps, and a few considerations about the construction cost and how we managed to reduce it as much as possible.

    Hi what type of fig tree do you grow in your backyard ?

    i wonder who will pollinate the fruit trees as the bees are still in hibernation

    • @HumanWisdom
      @HumanWisdom Місяць тому

      Most of our trees are self-pollinating. A few years ago we also bought some bumblebees, but the air draft of the natural ventilation does most of the job. One of our UA-cam friends here also suggested placing a beehive within the greenhouse wall with 2 trap doors: one that we can open towards the greenhouse when the trees are in bloom, and a second one that we will open to the outside for the rest of the spring, summer and fall.

    Very impressive for Montreal weather. I have a small geo thermal greenhouse in Vancouver I keep citrus in. The dug out design in early 20th century in Crimea had only small windows in winter with like you used plywood covers for citrus production.

    Mais n'y a t il jamais de surchauffe ? Le plastique sur ces serres est il durable. Je suis très intéressée par cette approche car je compte déménager dans une région froide en France et ce retour d'expérience Canadienne me paraît excellente. Merci pour cette vidéo.

      Pour éviter le risque de surchauffe il faut avoir des grandes fenêtres au plus HAUT niveau des murs frontals (ou idéalement directement sr le toit, si possible), et AUSSI des fenêtres au niveau le plus BAS sur les autres murs. Le plastique est du type 6 mil utilisé currement pour les serres et il resiste 5-6 ans.

    I live in zone 4 (Estonia) and we have been having -30c many winters, even slightly more. But many people including us grow apricots, grapes, sweet cherries, peaches outside. We just use a winter cover at least when the tree is young (or cover them with snow) and pick the right varieties. But figs no :D

    Thank you for the great info. I have a question on the thick snow cover of the roof. While the snow reduced heat loss through the roof, didn't it also shade the greenhouse? Did you use indoor lights to supplement the reduced light?

    • @HumanWisdom
      @HumanWisdom 3 місяці тому

      You are right, the snow on the roof was shading the greenhouse, but in the middle of winter (when the cold insulation of the snow counted quite a lot) all our plants were dormant, so they practically did not need much light, if any. That would not have been the case for some citrus plants for instance, which keep their leaves in wintertime, but for those, in time, we found alternative solutions... You can see a good example in this video: ua-cam.com/video/YvcaRhWt3qQ/v-deo.html

    Thank you for your very inspiring video! I hope I will be able do the same, since I love gardening and it is amazing to have an orchard during all the year seasons. I have some questions, if you don't mind. How do you make the compost? Do you include the "humanure"? (I got this word from "The Humanure Handbook" by Joseph Jenkins). We should return to the earth what we bring, otherwise there are a lot of nutriments that are lost forever through the sewage. Also I think it is easy to collect the rain water from the roof? We would also need a cellar, especially for the traditional Romanian pickles/murături, and maybe try to growth some mushrooms. All the best!

    Wonderful sun home Dan, and thanks for documenting and sharing the process. I like the Montreal-ish design, with stairs on outside, but so much more practical with greenhouse cover instead of being covered in snow like they are here!?! A few questions for you: What is the white exterior finish on house? Is it much more affordable building in Romania compared to Canada? What kind of glazing did you go with for sunroom? Thanks so much!

    • @HumanWisdom
      @HumanWisdom 4 місяці тому

      Thank you! The exterior of the house is of polystyrene covered with an acrylic coat (usually called EIFS - exterior insulation and finish system). Regarding the cost, as you know, things are constantly changing… but I would say the cost of building this house in Romania was half, or maybe even one third, of the cost of building it in Canada. The sunroom front wall is of 10 mm double-wall polycarbonate, and the two side walls are of 6 mm glass.

    I've being growing peaches and nectarines passively in Manitoba in a hardiness zone of 2 for the last 10 years.. the greenhouse design is quite low cost and passive in design. it a modified design of the UofM "manitoba greenhouse" or the "Chinese greenhouse". if you are curiosity i grow peaches, nectarines, figs, damsons, pears, I also started an apple tree greenhouse last year as well.. while I can grow apples outside normally i got tied of the inconsistent fruiting. and truthfully it nice having apples that are 3 to 4 inch in diameter then that are only ~2 inch in diameter. i can grow any fruit that rated zone 5 and under. i can grow zone 7 and under but it just needs a bit of modification but also doubles the cost of the greenhouse. i tried sweet cherries while i can grow them they are a bit to sensitive to temperature fluctuation . as i can have extreme fluctuation outside where it could be +30c and then -30c 12 hours later . sweet cherry do not like this type of swing. while in the greenhouse the swing is not that sever. but it enough of swing . that sweet ( bing) cherries do not like it and the tree is usually damaged.. nectarines and peaches do have that issue. so i prefer to grow those instead of worrying about sweet cherries and possible temperature swings I might get. if you google "krywenko Greenhouse for colder climate" you find info i posted years ago

    My friend, I greatly appreciate you taking the time to put this video together. As well as answering everyone's questions. This is what the internet is for. I am undertaking a very similiar project in Nova Scotia. I especially appreciate you documenting the temps of the dugout greenhouse. Designing a roof that holds the weight of the snow for a period of time (as well as the heat) is now something I will consider. My question for you however... did you use any plans for the sun terrace or do you have plans that you made? I work in the trades and have the ability to build something similiar on the south side of my house and your "sun terrace" is precisely what I need. Thank you.

    • @HumanWisdom
      @HumanWisdom 5 місяців тому

      I am very glad to hear about your green project! I do not have the 'as built' plans of our 'sun terrace', but, even if I would, those plans would not be of much help to the specific configuration of your house... Instead, if you would like to email me a few pictures of the exterior of your house, I can prepare a little sketch and send you back my opinion - hw@humanwisdom.ca I would like to mention that, based on our experience, the ideal position of a 'sun terrace' would be on the East side of the house (not on the South). That way, the terrace will receive direct sunshine in the morning and first half of the day, but will be in the house shadow in the afternoon, thus avoiding the strong afternoon heat in the middle of summer. We have recently finished construction of our 'dream house' with a sun terrace and an indoor Mediterranean garden, and I just published a YT video about the features and main construction steps of this house, which you may be interested to watch: ua-cam.com/video/ometMU9dY8Y/v-deo.html

    I have a small garden space and am really interested in trying a greenhouse (about twice the size of the average person's small garden greenhouse) but i want to try the digging method. This is to avoid height limitations of garden greenhouses / planning permissions in my area. But i'm wondering how i would make sure it doesn't flood.

    • @HumanWisdom
      @HumanWisdom 5 місяців тому

      I am very glad to hear about your desire to build a thermal-efficient greenhouse! Here are a few suggestions. 1. Digging the greenhouse in the ground 1 to 4 feet (depending on the local climate zone) and placing the excavated earth as berm walls around is definitely helping, and the berm will prevent any flooding. It is important to insulate with some extruded polystyrene the berm to the inside the greenhouse. I think that digging more than that may become detrimental, because we also need to ventilate adequately the greenhouse space - and to do that we have to install large windows at the HIGHEST level of some of the walls (or ideally, directly on the roof), AND also at the LOWEST level of some other walls, to create natural ventilation based on a chimney effect. (If the greenhouse would be 6 feet in the ground for example, then we could not place windows at the lower level...). 2. The glaze brings in the vital sunshine, but also loses a lot of heat in the winter... So, reducing its area to a minimum AND creating an insulating air space between 2 layers: one of plastic (on the roof), and a second one of frost cloth (as a ceiling) is very important. 3. If we orient the greenhouse East-West, we receive maximum sunshine during the day from the South. But also, the inside South wall will remain cold in winter, spring, and fall... because the sunshine will not reach that wall... Therefore, I prefer, if possible, to orient the greenhouse North-South, so the sunshine will warm up most of the walls. 4. I would create planting shelves on all the earth walls of the greenhouse, which will double the planting area. I suggest watching this update video, where you will see some further unheated greenhouse projects, which may inspire you: ua-cam.com/video/YvcaRhWt3qQ/v-deo.html I wish you best success and enjoyment of your green project!

    Good afternoon, Thank you very much for sharing this valuable information. I’m in Alaska and eager to create an as close to tropical enclosed area as I can. I’m reading as many books as I can and have learned that greenhouses with less glass might be beneficial in my area. I don’t know if you get more sun than we do but it’s limited in the winter here. I have a number of questions. 1. Do you think making the cherry greenhouse would have been warmer if you had made it a dug out area like the first? 2. The cherry greenhouse and your terrace have glaze on most sides. Do you think having less glaze would have helped reduce heat loss? Would the plants have done ok with less light and more warmth? 3. Did you consider the direction of the glaze when making your greenhouse? South with more glaze for more light and heat vs insulated North to reduce heat loss? I’m just at 22:43 of your video and might have my questions answered by the end. Thank you again.

It is important to insulate with some extruded polystyrene the berm to the inside the greenhouse! I think that digging more than that may become detrimental, because we also need to ventilate adequately the greenhouse space - and to do that we have to install large windows at the HIGHEST level of some of the walls (or ideally, directly on the roof), AND also at the LOWEST level of some other walls, to create a natural ventilation based on a chimney effect. (If the greenhouse would be 6 feet in the ground for example, then we could not place windows at the lower level...). 2. The glaze brings in the vital sunshine, but also loses a lot of heat in the winter... So, reducing its area to a minimum AND creating an insulating air space between 2 layers of plastic (on the roof) and frost cloth (as a ceiling) is very important. 3. If we orient the greenhouse East-West, we receive maximum sunshine during the day from the South. But also, the inside South wall will remain cold in winter, spring, and fall... because the sunshine will not reach that wall... Therefore, I prefer to orient the greenhouse North-South, so the sunshine will warm up most of the walls. 4. I would create planting shelves on all the earth walls of the greenhouse, which will double the planting area. I would suggest watching this update video, where you will see some further unheated greenhouse projects, which may inspire you: ua-cam.com/video/YvcaRhWt3qQ/v-deo.html I wish you best success and enjoyment of your green project!

    Human wisdom! Nice to see you posting again with updates. More of a sunroom than a greenhouse though. Are planning on building another greenhouse on this property?

      @HumanWisdom 5 місяців тому

      You are right, this is a terrace with a small indoor garden. We will build two greenhouses on this property: yesterday we started work on a year-round vegetable greenhouse, and in spring we will start working on a larger greenhouse with an indoor Mediterranean garden.
